1. Combining Genes to Create Drought Resistant Hybrids

By Sanjana Jagadeesh, Rhia Swaminath, Isabella Meceda, Grade 7, Cabrillo Middle School (SLI)

Design Challenge - Community Enrichment

Our initiative for this project aims to create new, more drought-resistant radishes by combining cherry belle and daikon varieties. We achieved this by grafting the cherry belle and daikon plants. Grafting is the process in which you select the plants with desired characteristics and combine them into one plant. There are many different techniques in grafting, but for our experiment we used the splice grafting technique. We identified the plant we wanted as the scion and the plant we wanted as the rootstalk. We then made cuts to the plants and binded the pieces together with tape. The pieces would heal and fuse together creating a hybrid.
